Self registration for coronavirus vaccine

The government recently launched the ‘Co-WIN App’ in a significant move to make the COVID-19 vaccine accessible to the general public, in which consumers would be able to self-register for the coronavirus vaccine. Those who are pre-registered on the app will get the vaccine as soon as any vaccination is released for use.

India has considered the authorization of three candidates for COVID-19 vaccines, including Pfizer-BioNTech, COVIDHIELD from SII, and COVAXIN from Bharat Biotech, prepared indigenously.

The revised version of the Electronic Vaccine Intelligence Network (e-VIN) is Co-WIN and downloaded for free from the Play Store. The government will vaccinate priority categories, including front-line personnel and ambulance workers, in the first two steps. In the third level, people with co-morbidities will get the job.

For vaccinators, beneficiaries, and administrators, the Co-WIN app will have four modules. These are the administrator module, registration module, vaccination module, beneficiary acknowledgment module, and reporting module.

Under the registration module, people who wish to get vaccinated will apply and provide information. The specifics of the Vaccine Module verified and the beneficiary acknowledgment module will send them a certificate about their vaccination.

Bharat Biotech based in Hyderabad said it applied for the emergency use authorization of its candidate for the coronavirus vaccine, Covaxin. American pharmaceutical giant Pfizer and the Serum Institute of India had previously asked the central drug regulator to approve their coronavirus vaccines for emergency use.

However the first two vaccines were developed by foreign countries, but Bharat Biotech, in cooperation with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), is developing Covaxin indigenously (ICMR). The vaccine is still in the third phase of clinical trials.
